Former Colchester hero Chris Iwelumo expressed relief at ending a nine-year wait to make it to the Premiership this week.

The 30-year-old Scotland international, who marked his debut last October by missing an open goal, spoke to the Colchester Gazette. The former Charlton man admitted it was “brilliant” to finally win promotion.

Iwelumo, once worshiped in Essex, has become something of a controversial figure for his disrespectful comments about United since his departure. He left on a Bosman in 2007, having scored 36 goals in two wonderful years with the club.

Chris also never missed a penalty while with United, and become the striker with the side to score four goals in a game in fifteen years, during 2006/7.

He has, however, since aired a number of personal views about the small-town nature of the Essex football club. This, after previously saying that former boss Phil Parkinson rescued him from the relative wildness of German second-division football.

On Wolverhampton`s elevation, however, Chris said: “Every player wants to play at the highest level. I`ve been trying to get to the Premier League for nine years.

“I`m sure there will be new players coming in. But I have two years left on my contract at Wolves and I just want to show what I can do.”
