Jabo Ibehre has reiterated his enjoyment at being with the U’s, as he hopes that the early season promise can be sustained and built upon as Joe Dunne’s side go in search of a successful season.

The U’s have started the season brightly and, ignoring Tuesday night’s disappointing cup exit to Dagenham & Redbridge, only a narrow defeat to table-topping Leyton Orient provides any blemish so far.

Joe Dunne’s side have been fluid in their football, opening up defences at will and creating an abundance of chances, albeit not always applying the clinical finish to it.

And Jabo Ibehre, currently the U’s joint top-scorer with two goals, admits that it is a pleasing contrast to last season when the side was struggling at the wrong end of the table.

‘It’s good to see smiles on faces after last year,’ he told BBC Essex. ‘But the way we finished with the spirit was magnificent. To go through something like that as a unit will make us stronger.

‘We’re creating so many chances so we need to keep focused and keep working hard, and then someone will be on the receiving end of that.

‘It’s great to see the confidence and people coming out of their shells. The manager gives you a license to enjoy it, the tempo is good and, hopefully, it can be a good season.’

Ibehre resigned for the U’s in the summer after a productive spell last season, where he impressed both on loan from MK Dons prior to Christmas and then, latterly, on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

The powerful forward finished joint top-scorer for the club and picked up multiple Player of the Year awards, and he admits that he is enjoying it here.

He said: ‘It’s been fantastic and I’m enjoying my time here. The boys have been pleased with the start. It’s early, but nice to get off to a good start and, in a few games, we should hit our peak.’
