Sam Walker has been the undoubted no.1 for Colchester for a while now but, with added competition from Chris Lewington and new arrival Elliot Parish and him also playing catch up in pre-season, this can’t be taken for granted – not that he would of course!

Walker’s missed all four of the U’s pre-season friendlies so far, Lewington and former Bristol City and Blackpool ‘keeper Parish – who of course signed this week – have filled in but a he could return against Leyton Orient today.

The Official Website has confirmed him in the squad for Orient’s visit to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

U’s squad – Walker, Parish, Olufemi, Brindley, Vincent-Young, Briggs, Eastman, Kent, Wynter, James, Lapslie, Edwards, Gilbey, Szmodics, Moncur, Massey, Sembie-Ferris, Wright, Holman, Bonne, Porter.

Richard Brindley, who the Bishop’s Stortford and West Ham wins, is also back with Walker in line to make his return as he works back to full fitness following his knee injury.

You tend to think that Walker and Parish are the ones that’ll battle hardest for the no.1 spot this season so it’ll be very interesting to see who Tony Humes goes with? The one who starts from the two today shouldn’t, and wouldn’t, have too much read into it!

The battle is on and that can only be a good thing for the U’s, as is the return of Walker.
