Colchester United midfielder Kevin Watson has given Geraint Williams his backing as U`s fans fret about a lack of close-season action – whether he signs transfer target Teddy Sheringham or not.

The midfielder, who was with Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur when Teddy was first in his pomp some seasons ago, recently told the Colchester Evening Gazette that puts faith in his manager to pick the right number two for the vacant job.

Sheringham is the latest in a long line of names to be linked with the post since Mick Harford quit last month to take up a similar position with QPR, but Watson said: “He (Williams) was an assistant for a long time so he`ll know exactly the sort of man he wants.”

Watson also indicated that he expects Sheringham, with whom he still maintains contact, to take up a coaching role in the near future.

Watson said: “I had a good chat with him a few weeks ago and I know from talking to him that he wants to go into the coaching side of the game.”

“I’m sure he’d be a very good coach.”
