Colchester’s League 1 season continued with a defeat against Burton at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on Saturday.
We’ll not be seeing any great Colchester escape this season with relegation into League 2 confirmed following a three-nil defeat against title chasing Burton.
An early sending off for Joe Edwards left Colchester with an even hard job with Burton going ahead on half time.
He had his second on 49-minutes with Atkins’ hat-trick completed on the hour to send the U’s down and leave the Brewers on for back-to-back promotion.

Barnsley’s (nil-nil) draw at Sheffield United saw them move into the final play-offs place ahead of Gillingham (three-two) following a defeat against Shrewsbury, who went into this match in serious relegation trouble.
These two (Barnsley and Gillingham) will now be the sides battling for that final spot.
Wigan (four-one) virtually confirmed a return to the Championship with them still leading the way but Burton (three-nil) continue to push them for the League 1 title after beating Colchester, with this defeat for the U’s confirming their relegation.
A heavy Walsall (four-nil) defeat at Bradford means the Saddlers now look as though they’ll have to join the Bantams in the play-offs, Burton can still be caught though for them to finish second.
Blackpool’s (nil-nil) failure to beat relegation rivals Fleetwood, taking into account their poor goal-difference means they’ll find it tough to escape the bottom four, which is something Doncaster (two-nil) have renewed hopes of managing after the win at the Keepmoat Stadium against Coventry.
It’s set to be one from three of Fleetwood, Blackpool and Doncaster that drop into the basement league.
