Colchester’s League 1 season continued with a draw against Crewe at Gresty Road on Tuesday.
An injury-time equaliser from already relegated Crewe means Colchester are now on the brink of joining them in League 2 next season.
A win might not have been enough but a one-one draw almost certainly wasn’t.
George Moncur gave Colchester the lead from the penalty spot on 65-minutes with this looking as if it would collect a crucial three-points but Callum Saunders headed an equaliser for Crewe in the 91st-minute to leave the U’s eight-points from safety with only three-matches left.

A top of the table battle between Burton and Wigan (one-one) at the Pirelli Stadium saw both retain the automatic promotion places, the Latics leading the way with Walsall (one-one) missing the chance to close in on them when they drew at the Banks’s Stadium against Swindon.
This automatic promotion battle could go all the way!
A play-off battle is also likely to go to the wire but Millwall (one-nil) are almost assured of a place following a one-nil win over relegation threatened Fleetwood.
Bradford (one-nil) dropped points when beaten at Coventry with Gillingham (one-one) just about clinging on to the final place at the moment but Barnsley (one-nil) are right on their coattails after the Oakwell win against Peterborough.
Oldham’s (one-nil) win at Southend leaves them looking good for survival now but Shrewsbury (two-one) are still very much in trouble with that Sheffield United win keeping alive faint, albeit unlikely, hopes the Blades have of a play-off place.
