Matt Lockwood, billed as a set-piece scoring left-back when he arrived from Nottingham Forest, has today told Sky Sports he wants his Colchester nightmare over with.

The defender, replaced this time last year by an impressive and far younger Marc Tierney, has hardly featured for the club since signing eighteen months ago and is looking to revitalise his career by capitalising on the current transfer window.

He said: “I want to get my long-term future sorted as soon as I can, which means that I would prefer a permanent deal somewhere. But if a loan move is what I am offered then I would grasp that instead because it offers me a way out. I don’t mind moving up north to play my football or elsewhere, as long as I can get thing sorted as soon as possible.”

Awarded a two-year deal upon arrival by then-manager and now Leyton Orient boss, Geraint Williams, Lockwood promptly suffered injury shortly after his arrival and then systematic exclusion from the squad by next incumbent, Norwich City`s notorious taskmaster, Paul Lambert.

In between, he has been farmed-out on loan to Dagenham & Redbridge (October 2009) and Barnet.

Lockwood had hoped for a new start post-Lambert, declaring himself the “happiest man in Colchester” when he Scot sensationally moved on earlier this season.

Today`s new quotes, however, speak of Lockwood`s desperation to play first-team football after his situation has continued to stagnate, as he believes his current U`s reputation precedes him: “A lot of people reckon I am injury-prone, but I have been injury-free for over a year now and I’m just not getting a chance due to manager’s preference here.

Fans would be hard-pressed to comment on Lockwood`s ability, as the 33-year-old has featured a mere seven times for United.

Has been very unlucky with injuries, his time here is certainly over., at the end of the day we have Tierney who aint going to be challenged for the LB spot in reality so he needs to play elsewhere. Up the U’s!

  • Matt_Us says:

White and Beevers can cover LB and Ifil could cover RB… we should let him go for free to say thanks for being honest over Lambert!

  • StevieG Col U says:

Yeah, some of his quotes were top quality following Lambert’s departure. Well, we’re not going to offer him a new deal in the summer, so reckon we’d let him go for free in Jan too.

Tom Bender looks set to be the natural successor to Tierney

Yep, had forgotten about him for a while there! He certainly does, haven’t heard much about him since when he made the sub appearance – think Aidy is bedding him in slowly, very wise IMO.
