Manager: My Players Deserved The Win

Geraint Williams has impressed upon the media how much his Colchester squad needed and deserved three points against Sheffield Wednesday yesterday.

It lightens the mood and unloads some of the pressure ahead of Watford`s visit to Essex on Tuesday.

The manager said to the waiting media at full time: “People have said we are too good to go down, but nobody is too good. You have to keep proving it and we have to keep going.

“I told the players this is a big club and a wonderful set-up and I told the lads to go out and enjoy it and I think they did.”

The U`s boss, who recently denied that there is any pressure at the club, went on:’This was a massive win because, when you don’t get a result, sometimes belief can disappear. But we have kept going and we got the result we deserved.’

In a report published after full-time yesterday, he was also full of praise for the astute way that Teddy Sheringham scored a third goal of the season: “It was Teddy’s pace that got behind their defence for the goal! It was a bit of a surprise to see him there!”

“Teddy’s top quality and he took his goal well. It was a great start for us, and he made a big impact.

“It’s been coming for a long while, like at Wolves in the week when we hit the post at the start and at the end of the game.

Williams was obviously a delighted and relived man: “Going forward we were a big threat, and it’s just a disappointing that we didn’t go on to get the third and fourth goals in the second-half.

“I have players with stitches, and players with concussion, but we at Colchester have to play flat out to compete at this level.”
