Mark Venus is in the running to succeed Aidy Boothroyd as Colchester United manager, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

Well-known locally for his stints as a player at Ipswich Town, Cambridge United and Dagenham & Redbridge, the former defender also spent part of his nineteen-year playing career with Wolverhampton Wonders and Ipswich Town.

Since retiring in 2004 he has followed Tony Mowbray as a coach first to West Bromwich Albion and then Celtic. The Telegraph claims he is ready to take his first steps into management after spells as an assistant, following a short spell without employment since recently quitting Parkhead along with Mowbray.

Mention of Mowbray`s aside Venus now that Aidy Boothroyd has joined Coventry City would also prompt fans to ask if he himself is in any way in contention for the vacancy.

Venus,43, however, would certainly fulfil Chairman Robbie Cowling`s criteria as young and ambitious and probably enjoy a reaction similar to that accompanying Phil Parkinson`s surprise Reading arrival in 2003 or of course cause furrows akin to those seen when Paul Lambert, via Wycombe, was handed the role five years later.

Well, the football would certainly be tasty if he did get the job after working with Mowbray!

Not sure where this has come from, might be a bit of a stab in the dark!
