Colchester United’s young attacking prospect Anthony Wordsworth has said he is delighted to be the latest in a long line of debutants for the club’s youth system.

During the summer, Wordsworth netted three times in non-competitive friendly games and an obvious sharpness and eye for goal lead manager Geriant Williams to include him among the substitutes on the opening day of the season against Sheffield United.

Despite being an unused member of the squad, Anthony featured again among the 16 as the U’s travelled to a sunny Shropshire to face Shrewsbury Town. With the game tied, Wordsworth was introduced.

“I’m delighted to have made my debut so early in to the season,” the 19-year-old told the East Anglian Daily Times last week. “I was happy with my performance against Shrewsbury,” he added, despite the fact that Colchester eventually went down one nill after a goal from Darren Kempson.
