Colchester’s former Chelsea youngster Sam Walker has put pen to paper on a contract extension.

Walker, with these talks ongoing for a little while, was gong to be out of contract soon but the signing from Chelsea last January, after a couple of previous loan spells, was always expected to sign a new deal.

This was finalised this week with him extending until the end of next season.

Walker has told BBC Essex that he feels that his career is developing in the right way by being at the WHCS and as much as he could have chanced his arm elsewhere he’s more than happy where he is at the moment being our no.1

He said: ‘I’m very happy and very comfortable here. I’m playing first-team football and developing so this is the right place to be.

‘I could have held on until January but I don’t have any interest at this stage of my career in going anywhere to sit on the bench or be a squad player.’

The U’s are currently in the league 1 drop zone but Walker’s confident that we’ll turn things around with him citing the signing of the experienced Latvian defender Kaspars Gorkss on a short-term deal as being ‘huge’ and likely to make a big difference.
