No Approach From Lincoln – Ward

Aidy Boothroyd exclaimed yesterday that his assistant, John Ward, turned to him as Colchester faced setbacks against Southampton to say: “Welcome back, Aidy.”

That exchange happened as Colchester lost first their central midfielder, Kem Izzet followed secondly by defender, Pat Baldwin, through red card and injury respectively in Boothroyd’s first mach back after ten months out.

But could it have been Ward in sole charge of another team that day, instead?

No, in short. Although he was linked, just prior to his arrival at Colchester, with the current Lincoln vacancy, the U’s new number two, said he never communicated with the club.

Popular as a Lincoln player in his birthplace during 1970s, Ward was only speculatively linked with the post.

He confirmed in Monday`s Lincolnshire Echo: “I never spoke to anybody at Lincoln City. Everybody else was talking about it.”

Ward will be well-aquatinted with current U`s squad members, Simon Hackney and Ben Williams, whom he has followed from his old club, Carlisle United.

Being a reasonably well known lower league manager its inevitable he will be linked with many L1/L2 jobs throughout the season
