Perkins On U’s Move

He told CU-FC.com: ‘I got stuck at Morecambe a bit, if I’m honest and the Rochdale manager Keith Hill gave me a chance in league football, for which I am very grateful.

‘I had a good season with Rochdale, but I am over the moon to be signing for Colchester and trying my chances at a higher level.

‘I have always been involved with sides pushing for promotion and that was one of the things the manager sold to me when we were talking about me joining for Colchester. I think I am joining a club that can do just that this year.

‘I spoke to the chairman (Robbie Cowling) and had a look around the new ground last week.

‘He also showed us the plans for the training facilities that they’re hoping to get sorted and I was very impressed.

‘I spoke to a couple of League One clubs over the summer, but decided that Colchester were the best option for me.

‘Of course it’s going to be a change for me, living down south and playing my football at this level, but it’s one that I am willing to do.

‘Myself and Steve Gillespie have been sat by the fax machine all day, so I can’t wait to get out there to be honest!

‘I am keen to impress and am really looking forward to getting going.’

Rochdale manager Keith Hill On Move

He told the club’s official website: ‘There was absolutely nothing that I or the football could about David leaving.

‘We gave him his opportunity and now he has the opportunity to represent Colchester in a higher league which is what he wanted, he has a lot of time to catch up.

‘There is no negativity with respect to David, he is one of my mates. He helped myself and Dave Flitcroft to prosper in this environment and we helped him.

‘We wish him all the best in his future but our future is with Rochdale Football Club and the squad that we have and that is a very good one.

‘Ideally we would have retained Perks for another season but that could not be achieved. The club could not do anything-we offered him a new deal and he turned it down which he had every right to do.

‘Time moves on though and he will soon be forgotten provided we continue to win football matches.
