Having scored four-goals in Colchester’s FA Cup first round win over Wealdstone on Saturday, you could say Macauley Bonne ‘proved his point’ didn’t he!

This, as he told the BBC, is something he’s been working hard to do recently as he looks to convince Colchester boss Tony Humes that he should be in the U’s first-team.

After his four-goals in the six-two win over Wealdstone Bonne’s hopeful he’s ‘shown what he can do’ and he’ll get a chance when it comes to League 1, he said.

‘I’ve been trying to prove my point for the last month, scoring and putting in shifts for the under-21s. I like the 21s because it shows them I can play against strong opposition.

‘Hopefully I’ve shown what I can do and it’s up to the managers.’

In his first start since 1st September scoring four-goals wouldn’t have done his chances any harm would he!

As well as his goals he also hit the crossbar and had another chance, which he would have been expected to take, against the National League South side as he almost doubled his previous career tally (of seven) in one afternoon….

It goes without saying he was happy with his four-goals but also feels; if he was more clinical, he could have had more.

‘I’m happy with the four, but at the end of the day I could have had probably double that.

‘I think I did fatigue a bit and probably could have cut (the late chance) across, but when you’re on four you just get greedy and think ‘what’s the point?”
