Such has been the progress of Drey Wright through his Colchester apprenticeship that he is now on professional terms with The U’s.

Wright himself admits that he expected to be entering into his second year of his scholarship although John Ward has been significantly impressed to hand him a professional contract.

The youngster is keen to make the most of this opportunity, telling the official website: ‘it was very pleasing to be offered a deal and it also came as a bit of a shock because I was expecting to have to do my second year as a scholar.

‘All I want to do now is work with the first-team lads and develop my game. I don’t really want to be dropping back into the youth team.’

If Wright can actually break into the first-team this season remains to be seen but as the old saying goes, if he impresses in training, if he’s good enough he’s old enough!
