Former Cardiff full-back Chris Barker, who joined QPR this week over Colchester, has stated his hope that the current U`s squad do not suffer a complete break-up.

The 27-year old, who spent last season at Layer Road and played 38 games, said in today`s East Anglian Daily Times: “I`d love to have come back to Colchester, but it wasn`t to be.”

The player, whose future fate was apparently decided away from Layer Road when he failed to make his Cardiff loan a permanent switch in January, added: “I had a really enjoyable eight months there but it just didn`t happen long-term.”

Baker went on to say: “I wish Colchester all the best and I hope that they have another good season. I don`t want the current team to just fall apart.”

With that line, he echoed the current concern of everyone at the club. Barker, however, did admit that he was surprised with recent events at Layer Road.

“I`m very surprised to hear that Jamie (Cureton) has requested a transfer. Chris (Iwelumo) leaving to go to Charlton was not a big surprise. It would be a shame if too many of them left.”

“I owe a lot to Colchester, particularly George (Geraint Williams) and Mick (Harford),” he added. “Colchester gave me the chance to get my career back on track. They were a great set of lads.”
