Vital Football Colchester Exclusive

It has emerged that the fresh doubts over Karl Duguid`s future at Colchester United have only surfaced because a leading national newspaper wrongly identified want-away defender Wayne Brown as the club`s captain.

Duguid, who yesterday moved to extinguish the most recent round of blazing speculation, called rumour linking him with a move away from United “lies”.

The midfielder, a graduate with the squad since making his debut in 1995, went on to dismiss an idea would bare any resentment toward new singing Teddy Sheringham over the amount he is set to earn in his one-year contract at Layer Road, supposedly £6,000 per-week.

The offending article appeared in the Daily Mirror last Wednesday, on the morning of Sherignham`s arrival at the club.

It is believed that this article then contributed to Teddy`s comments later that day, when the 41-year-old told those at the conference, including representatives from this website, that he was forced to seek assurances from Duguid before penning his contract.
