Colchester United have signed released Barnsley defender Paul Reid, on a free transfer.

Vital Colchester had previously reported that Reid was a target, to read the article click here. Reid is the third player to join the U’s this summer, joining Matt Heath and Matt Lockwood in bolstering the U’s back-line. The 26-year-old centre back – who can also play in midfield – had his Tykes’ contract cancelled by mutual consent yesterday.

Reid joined in training with his new team mate’s today.

Reid started out with Carlisle United, making 22 appearances at Brunton Park. In 2000, he moved to Scottish giants Rangers but failed to break into the first team. Also in 2000, Reid featured for England at under-19 level. Two years later, Reid was loaned out to Preston North End then repeated the fate with Northampton Town. In the summer of 2003, he joined the Cobblers permanently. A year later, he was snapped up by Barnsley and impressed for the Tykes. At the start of the next season, Reid was made captain and helped Barnsley win promotion to the Championship. Reid played a pivotal part in the 2006/07 season, as The Reds avoided relegation.

On the 8th January this year, Reid was transfer-listed by manager Simon Davey. One of Reid’s last appearances in a Barnsley shirt was against the U’s, where he was sent off.

Vital Colchester would like to welcome Paul aboard and wish him the best of luck in his U’s career.

Well seems good news, we have plenty of enough in defence now, Reid, Coyne, Heath and Baldwin all competing for the two centre-back spots and Lockwood, White and Ifil for the full-bsck spots.
