Former West Ham striker Freddie Sears’ contract with Colchester expires at the end of the season, all the while he doesn’t sign a new deal we risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

This isn’t going to be something that we’ll want so as much as we don’t want to lose our top goalscorer if an offer came in for him in January, which reports are suggesting it could from clubs at higher levels, we might feel we’ve no option but to accept this?

A new contract was first offered to Sears in October but he’s yet to sign this….

Sears has told the Gazette though that talks are ongoing and he plans, if nothing else, to at least see out his contract but also says that there’s ‘always a possibility’ he could still sign a new deal.

He said: ‘I’m under contract until the end of the season and I’m in talks with the chairman all the time.

‘Nothing’s really happening at the minute but I love it here and I’m happy to be here, so I don’t see why I won’t be here.

‘There’s always a possibility that I might sign my contract.’

Hopefully this will be the case but the further we get into January without a new contract signed the more likely it could become that an offer made for him, and we would expect this, could be too good to refuse?
