Vital Colchester yesterday launched a week-long countdown for all things U`s. Today, we look at the top five goals from last season, as the U’s recorded a mid-table finish…
5) Dean Hammond Vs Huddersfield Town (A) – 03/03/2009
With the U’s trailing 2-1 at The Galpharm Stadium and the U’s usual dead-ball specialist Mark Yeates off the pitch, skipper Hammond stepped up and curled a delicate free-kick into the top-corner to bring the U’s level.

4) Clive Platt Vs Millwall (A) – 31/03/2009
After being under the kosh for the majority of the game, a well worked corner late on found Platt and the big target-man stooped to head a fierce header into the net in the 84th minute.

3) Mark Yeates Vs Leicester City (A) – 21/03/2009
Just over twenty minutes in at The Walkers Stadium, against the run-away league leaders, Yeates pinged a terrific free-kick into the near side of the home goal to put the U’s ahead.

2) Anthony Wordsworth Vs Southend United (A) – 01/11/2008
Wordsworth’s goal at the U’s deadliest rivals isn’t 2nd for its quality, although its not a bad goal in fairness, but for the sheer jubilation it bought U’s followers. The young midfielder met John White’s pin-point cross to fire beyond the stranded keeper and bring the U’s from 2-0 down to 3-2 up at Roots Hall. And Woody’s ‘crowd-dive’ celebration that followed would certainly win celebration of the season!

1) Mark Yeates Vs Leeds United (A) – 13/12/2008
In the second half at Elland Road, after initially going 1-0 down, Hammond had dragged the U’s level on the stroke of half-time. U’s fans were hoping their side could nick a goal and head back South with three points on a cold December afternoon. And when the U’s were rewarded a free-kick, in a position which looked impossible to score from, they probably weren’t expecting what happened next. As Yeates stepped over the ball, most people inside the ground were expecting a cross, but Yeates whipped a sublime, world-class effort into the far top-corner. The ball cannoned in off the post and put the U’s ahead in a historic win.
