Sheringham Doubt For Shews Clash

It has emerged that Colchester United forward Teddy Sheringham is doubtful tonight as the Essex outfit face an away trip to Shrewsbury Town in the Carling Cup.

Colchester’s Clive Platt, however, with a suspension to kick in directly after tonight’s game, is expected to start the game following a great debut showing against Championship promotion contenders Sheffield United.

Platt, who called his ban “a bloody suspension” on BBC Radio Essex at full time on Saturday, said he was delighted to have opened his competitive account for the club after only one game. The 29-year-old striker also again reiterated his desire to avoid comparison with former forward, Chris Iwelumo, the man who he has replaced at Layer Road.

“The Championship is a big step up for me, but the boys have made me feel welcome,” Platt told the media. In reference the result, he said: “We put a lot of hard work into this performance. Not many teams will come back twice to get a draw with Sheffield United this season; we deserved the point.”

A plethora of injuries to forwards, with a question mark over Sheringham, plus doubts over Jamie Guy and Kevin Lisbie, could leave the U’s with little opinion but to deploy a five-man midfield in tonight’s match. Midfielder Anthony Wordsworth, may get a call in a withdrawn role alongside Platt, after showing decent scoring form over the summer during non-competitive games.
