Veteran Colchester stopper Aidan Davison the club can avoid relegation with the help of new boys Chris Coyne and Phil Ifil.

The 39-year-old has told the Colchester Gazette that winning games is a priority between now and May, and a boost of confidence as generated by the new arrivals can only help that process.

“We need organisers and communicators in the team and Chris Coyne is one of them and Phil has been impressive too.

They are astute signings and they have both fitted very, very well into the group,” said the one-time Premier League and Northern Ireland stopper.

“You just have to get back to basics and do the right things,” added Davison, who is due to hang up his professional groves in May after more than 20 years in football.

The Gazette article points out that Davison has endured many relegation fights before, and so his advice on the U`s predicament – the club are bottom of the table at present – should be headed.

“For the whole team to function well, everyone has to do their own jobs,” he said. “I think you also need a good team spirit when the chips are down. Without that you won’t move forward – but we know we need more than that in our position.

“We know we have a good enough pool of players to win football matches.”
