Tony Humes was less than impressed with another poor defensive performance in Colchester’s midweek JPT defeat at Northampton.

‘Footballing and nice things’ are being done well but he’s told BBC Essex things have to change after nine-goals were conceded in the last three-matches!

Including three in this three-two defeat at Sixfields, Humes said.

‘We do the footballing and nice things very well. But when it gets to doing the horrible things, we’re not good enough at this moment in time to do what we have to.’

‘It’s players taking that decision on the pitch to stop that from happening – it’s the individual mindset of players.’

A Macauley Bonne double counted for nothing, but a confidence booster for him, with the League 2 side running out winners after goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ryan Watson and Marc Richards.

If the amount of goals the U’s a shipping is going to continue that way the boss knows his side needs to be more clinical in a ‘we’ll scored more than you’ kind of thing, adding.

‘We did a lot better, but again there’s opportunities to be more ruthless and clinical – you’ve got to take your chances.

‘If we’re going to be as soft as we are, you have to take your chances, but first and foremost we can’t go on conceding goals like that.’

The boss finished by adding that he feels the summer additions have been more than good enough but now ‘it’s up to them to stand up and show what they are made of.’

As we know this weekend will see Colchester without a fixture as Sheffield United’s international call ups led to this League 1 game being postponed.

This trip to Bramall Lane has been rescheduled though so the U’s will now head to the Blades at 7:45pm Tuesday 15th September now, with the Official Website confirming this and that, of course, all tickets remain valid.
