A weekend of mixed reviews for Colchester United fans as a Southend United side featuring their loaned defender Pat Baldwin were relegated but Norwich City confirmed League One Champions.

It was perhaps inevitable that Essex eyes would drift elsewhere once Colchester put in their drawing display at Tranmere Rovers, which ended 1-1. As the season`s climax ensured results elsewhere meant more than what was happening on home turf, they duly did.

The U`s big divisional rivals have been demoted out of a derby game on next season`s fixture list after their 2-2 draw with Oldham sealed what was a stay of execution at the wrong end of the table. A Norwich side managed by ex-boss Paul Lambert did not falter, though; they confirmed their position as title-winners with a gritty 2-0 victory over Gillingham.

It now remains a four-way fight betweeen Leds United, Swindon Town, Millwall and Charlton for the second automatic Championship promtion place.

Huddersfield meanwhile also not a much-needed result, one to render next weekend`s meeting between the two teams meaningless in terms of the competition for the play-offs. They won 6-0 against Stockport to confirm their own place at the expense of the U`s.

Sad to see Southend go down, always a good couple of games against them each season – something we’ll miss…!
