Teddy Doesn’t Regret U’s Move

Footballing legend Teddy Sheringham has revealed that he does not regret joining Colchester United.

Sheringham put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal at Layer Road, following his release by West Ham, last July. The former England international was brought in by manager Geraint Williams to bolster the U’s attack, following the departure of prolific duo Jamie Cureton and Chris Iwelumo. Sheringham has struggled for goals, and form, only finding the net on four occasions. Two of his goals have been from the penalty spot, these coming from 22 appearances.

‘It’s been disappointing for the last two or three months with us being relegated and it’s been a sad season,’ Sheringham told The Colchester Gazette.

‘It never really got going, even though it started quite well.

‘I’m very disappointed with the way it’s gone.

‘But I’ve had a lot of good ones over the years and I suppose it just tells me that it’s the right time to retire.

The Champions League winner continued: ‘And I don’t regret coming to Colchester United.

‘The lads are great here, the manager is a very nice man and he’s talked me through everything he’s been doing this year and looked after me.

‘It’s just that I couldn’t produce and we couldn’t produce as a team and that’s the disappointing thing.’

The 42-year-old former Millwall, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, Man United and West Ham striker made a first appearance in two months for the U’s on Saturday. He got half-an-hour under his belt as the U’s said farewell to Layer Road with a defeat to Stoke. While he was happy to return, he admitted a it was disappointing to leave with a loss.

‘It was very disappointing to leave with a defeat,’ he added.
