Paul Lambert has told the media over the weekend that the summertime cheque book at Colchester has closed.

The Scot says he doesn`t expect to make any more signings for the club, having brought in eight new faces since the end of the season. “The chances of other players coming in are remote,” he said in the EADT last week.

Time and again, the manager has talked his summer about creating a tight unit and playing as a team with a good work ethic. There have been casualties – terrace favorites, Dean Gerken, Mark Yeates and John White have all been sacrificed.

But Lambert`s relative revaluation of the current squad paid a very short-term dividend so far after the 7-1 thrashing of an abysmal Norwich City.

On Friday, however, the boss proved he is partial to the odd transfer tit-bit as he passed comment in the Daily Gazette a crazy Henrik Larsson rumor. There were a lot of names mentioned.”

Henrik Larsson was one of them and if I could have brought him here, I would have done. In fact, I would have gone to Sweden myself and brought him over!”

Most Colchester fans were skeptical that he`d be available and these comments by the manager confirm the former Celtic and Barcelona man wasn`t a reasonable target.

There were a lot of names banded about. Some of them were far off the mark and others weren`t but that`s the nature of the game,” said Lambert.

Ah, well!
