Geraint Williams yesterday left his post as U’s manager by mutual consent after just over two years at the helm.

Vital Colchester’s StevieG Col U takes a look at some of the candidates to replace him.

Leading The Race…

Billy Davies – The ex-Preston North End man has been out of football for nearly a year after leaving, then Premier League side, Derby County. The former Leicester City player was harshly punished for a poor start to Premiership life, with the Rams. Davies had worked wonders in his first season at Pride Park, leading them to a play-off victory over West Brom.

Phil Parkinson – The Charlton Assistant manager lead the U’s to a historic promotion to the Championship three years ago. Parkinson left in controversial circumstances to join Hull City, but lasted only a few months at the KC Stadium.

Ian Holloway – The former Plymouth Argyle boss has been out of management since leaving Leicester City at the end of last season. Holloway is widely known for his lively character, but has a mixed track record.

Kit Symons – The former Crystal Palace assistant was yesterday named caretaker-manager with the U’s. Symons linked up with the U’s, as assistant, in January.

Others…

Alan Curbishley – The ex-Charlton Athletic manager was one of the first managerial casualty`s of the new season, departing Premier League side West Ham. Curbishley would bring a wealth of experience to the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Mike Newell – The former Luton Town boss is another name which has been mentioned. He impressed in the majority of his time with the Hatters and has been out of football for over a year.

Joe Dunne – The U’s reserve-team manager, currently teaming up with Symons as caretaker-manager, has also taken charge of the U’s youth team.

Teddy Sheringham – The ex-U’s player, who retired at the end of last season, has no managerial experience to his name so far. However, Sheringham is a known friend of U’s chairmen Robbie Cowling so could link up with him.

Mick Harford, Steve Foley, Joe Royle, Steve Tilson, Tony Adams, Steve Cotterill and Mark Kinsella are other names which have been mentioned.
