Forward Simon Thomas will spend the next few weeks training with Colchester United as he looks to land a full-time contract with the U’s.
The 25-year-old former Crystal Palace man featured in the ‘Mini Essex Derby’ between the U’s second-string and their Southend United counterparts on Wednesday afternoon – netting twice in a 5-1 U’s victory. Thomas is currently registered with Ryman League Premier Division side Billericay Town.
U’s boss Aidy Boothroyd told the EADT: ‘The arrangement is that he will train with us and play for Billericay. This is a good opportunity for him to earn a contract with us.’
Thomas, who made his name with non-league side Boreham Wood, failed to settle with Palace and made only one appearance during a 18-month spell at Selhurst Park.
