Joe Dunne has called on Freddie Ladapo to begin showing his potential this season by integrating more consistently with the first team squad as the youngster looks to make his breakthrough.

Ladapo, now aged twenty, made a handful of cameo appearances last season after making his Football League bow in the Boxing Day defeat to Brentford, and Dunne is urging the youngster to fulfil the promise he has shown in recent years.

Last year he bagged a hatful of goals in the U’s maiden season in the U21s league and, having had a taste of the first team set up, Dunne believes it is time for the big front man to make the step up.

‘Freddie needs to step away from the U21s level now and come into the senior level on a full-time basis,’ he explained to the official site. ‘He’s a player with potential but, like anyone with potential, they need to train and play with the right attitude every day.’

During the summer months Ladapo has put pen to paper on a contract extension along with Mark Cousins, but you can’t help but feel that this will be a big year for the youngster that will either make or break his time with the U’s.

For the time being at least, Dunne was happy to have Ladapo signed up.

‘There is a lot more to come from Freddie, so I’m pleased that we’ve kept him,’ he said. ‘We have to make sure that his progression is monitored properly.’
