Now back in the Colchester side Ben Williams is looking for The U’s to build on the draw at Tranmere and prove that they can make it into the league one play-offs.

The U’s keeper, as he told The Gazette, believes that the club are good enough to push on for a play-off spot but unlike recent seasons when this assault has fallen away he wants this to be maintained.

He admits it might be viewed as ‘gate-crashing the party’ but Colchester are capable of doing this: ‘it’s up to us to maintain a good run of form and get into the play-offs, at least. If you look at the league, you could argue that there are more than six teams who are seen as bigger than us.

‘We’d be gatecrashing the party if you like but we have the squad and management that are more than capable of doing that.

‘We have to get our heads down and work hard and performances like the one at Tranmere are something to build on.

‘It’s been three years now that we’ve been close to it and fallen away and I think it’s about time that we proved a point and did it.’

Colchester are currently five points off the play-off places but have suffered only one defeat in their league eight outings.

Is Ben Williams justified with his comments, and can The U’s push on for promotion?
