Chris Coyne has been confirmed as a Perth Glory signing today – even though it probably means he`ll take a pay-cut.
The 30-year-old joins following the termination of his Colchester contract yesterday afternoon, after months of speculation over his next move. Gold Coast United were the first club to mooted as a possible destination.
Coyne expressed his relief that the deal was finally done, in today`s EADT: “I’m glad it’s all over. Pim Verbeek said it’s a good idea to come to Perth because he’ll see a lot more of me. And that’s helped me make up my mind.”
The player took advice from his national-team coach as U`s manager Paul Lambert told him there was no guarantee he would figure prominently in England`s League One next season.
Although signing a three-year-contract with the club, Glory`s filled quota of marquee players – as they now have a strong squad including names like Mile Sterjovksi and Jacob Burns- Coyne`s wage is likely to fall outside the A-league salary gap.
That is, unless he takes the Glory captaincy from his brother, Jamie.
David Mitchell, Glory manager, previously said that wages were a potential stumbling point of the now completed transfer.
