Transfer Rumour: Luton Want Coyne Comeback?

Chris Coyne returned to Essex for pre-season training today with no news about his possible departure. Nothing official, anyway.

On Friday, Vital Colchester reported, click here, that Coyne was still considering a move a move to Australian side, Perth Glory. The defender had been offered three-year terms and previously explained to newspapers in Oz that interested had arisen from the Middle East, China and Korea, too.

Taking the statement from this morning`s Colchester Evening Gazette as fact – that Coyne reported as due for the pre-season schedule after a holiday – means accepting all other previous moves as very unlikely.

Coyne had been interesting Perth Glory, Sydney FC, Gold Coast United and Adelaide. The Glory said they expected to sign him in the last 48 hours.

Since, Luton Town fans on a BBC forum in England say they believe Coyne might jeopardise his now very real hopes of playing in next summer`s World Cup with Oz, by signing instead for his ex-club.

The same club, that is, Coyne used to skipper and left eighteen months ago, before he joined the U`s. Luton have since suffered two terrible demotions to English non-league level and are cash-strapped.

That Coyne is alleged as one of the highest-paid players on the U`s payroll makes this transfer link quite simply the silliest and most impossible seen about any Colchester player so far this summer.

You can’t blame Luton supporters for trying; he’s been linked with just about every club in his homeland since the end of the season, after all. Still, Coyne, if this idea is worth entertaining, could only feasibly return to the Bedfordshire club if he bought out his own contract.

There`s just one thing official about this rumour, actually; it`s officially nonsense.

Vital Colchester would like to add an apology to this article following the comment from Scotty in below submission box and retract the earlier opinion that Luton Town are anything like a “virtually insolvent” football club, as previously suggested. The material has now been changed.

FURTHER UPDATE: LUTON FAN GIVEN RIGHT OF REPLY; E-MAIL EXCERPT PUBLISHED IN RESPONSE TO ARTICLE –

“I saw your article about Chris Coyne via NewsNow. As a Luton fan I was interested in the statement that Luton are ‘virtually insolvent’. I don’t have inside knowledge but I do know that we have investors who have been putting money into the club and this has helped bring about financial stabilisation (coupled with a vast reduction of the wage bill).

Although the club’s league position is not ideal I would say that financially we are no worse than dozens of clubs throughout the divisions and that our present board have a long term vision and have united the fans.

Good luck for the season, I hope that we can follow in your footsteps and win the Conference.”

Is Coyne staying now he is back with the sqaud? And would Colchester just give him back to Luton, even if he wanted to go?
