Colchester failed to collect any points at home to Plymouth in what was their first ever home game at this level of football at Layer Road.

Luke Somerfield broke the home teams hearts with a strike after 30 mins low to Davidsons right, indeed Davison could do nothing to stop what was Summerfield`s first ever goal in the football league and what turned out to be the only goal of the game.

The U`s had started brightly and could have been ahead on 3 mins when Garcia saw his shot cannon of the woodwork only for McCormick to save from Cureton who threw himself at the rebound.

The U`s continued to push forward with confidence looking for their first goal at Layer Road.

In what was a rare attack Plymouth nearly went ahead after Brown deflected a shot from David Norris past a flat footed Aiden Davidson only for the ball to roll past Davidson`s left hand upright.

Duguid was having a lot of joy on the left after driving at the Pilgrims defence he saw his lob clear the keeper only to be cleared from the line by Hasney Aljofree, this was headed back by Halford who could only watch in agony as his headed attempt landed on the roof of the net.

At this time it seemed that only one team were going to score, however Baldwin made a mistake at the back, giving the ball away to Norris who`s cross was not dealt with by the U`s defence, Summerfield picked the ball up about 25 yards out controlled and scored to Davisdon`s Right.

Colchester were not to be down hearted, they continued to attack as they had before the goal, with Cureton nicking the ball off of McCormick, as he crossed the ball to a waiting Duguid, the Pilgrims defence managed to get it clear.

Halford took the game by the scruff of the neck striding forward from the half way line, leaving two players in his wake, only to see his shot collected easily by McCormick.

The second half was a more even affair, with limited chances for both sides, Iwelumo replaced Izzet and Garry Richards came on for Pat Baldwin who hadn`t had one of his better games.

Davidson saved from Norris while Cureton and Iwelumo couldn`t get on the end of a delightful Watson cross.

It seemed that the U`s had decided to lump everything forward and the players in the centre of the park who had been influential in the first half of the game were being bi-passed by long balls aimed at Iwelumo.

Cureton did have a chance to put the keeper under pressure however from where I was sitting it looked as though the defender handled the ball after Cureton had flicked it over his head. Nothing was given however, and Cureton would have been better placed trying to shoot towards goal.

The game seemed to peter out, with Colchester desperately looking for the equalizer; Wotton had a late shot which Davidson collected into his midriff.

On balance of play Colchester should have had at least got a point from the game, they could have even won it had they of taken their chances.

Vital Man of the Match:

Wayne Brown, another all action accomplished display.

We have had to suffer many 1-0 defeats in this league over the past 2 seasons whe we were the better side. So it makes a change to get something.
