Robbie Cowling says it could be the end of the road at Colchester for the squad`s remaining castaways, Medi Elito, Jhonnie Jackson, Phil Ifil and Matt Lockwood.

Midfielder Jackson, yet to speak publically about his almost out-of-the-blue transfer request, could still commit a U-turn but defender Ifil (trialed with MK Dons recently) Lookwood (listed as available for free on the PFA website) and Elito appear to have played their last games for the club.

Speaking to the EADT over the weekend, said, the U’s ownder said: “The squad is a little too big, so a few more might move out.”

It`s not earth-shattering news; even Jackson`s desire to quit seems sensible for him in light of the fact that United have many players vying for his preferred spot in the team, central midfield. He`s young enough, and therefore eligible at a peak footballing age, to earn a well-paid contract with another club.

Cowling again: “Some want to move on, and that might happen in the next few weeks.”

Matt Heath, and John White also moved out on laon in recent times, which suggests at least that this trio might have a chance to play in stripes again sometime in future.

For now, given what happened on Saturday, boss Paul Lambert has proved he is at least worth trusting when it comes to the tough calls being made where United`s squad is concerned. Fully vindicated? Time will tell.
