Colchester United start the selection process for their next manager on Monday, formally interviewing just five on a list of more than 30 candidates.

Chief Executive, Steve Bradshaw told Dram 100 FM last night that some “world-renowned” names have declared private interest in the post, alongside the less-fancied non-league boss, Julian Dicks and thus far non-committal Paul Buckle.

It`s been an interesting week – it wasn`t what I was expecting but the guys have been brilliant, the fans have been brilliant the players have done great and the staff have really rallied together – it`s something I`m very proud of,” said Bradshaw last night.

He had already told the Evening Gazette this week that the club will interview just five potentials during final-round interviews.

As he mentioned on Tuesday, there has indeed been a remarkable about of interest in the job, although ex-Colchester player, Teddy Sheringham, instantly pulled out of the running yesterday.

I wanted to share what we are doing with the fans. At the moment, we`ve had some fantastic applications already, over thirty of them. Some of them are absolutely brilliant, from literarily world-renowned people,” Bradshaw added.

It is also possible that caretaker Joe Dunne is a contender, after he hinted earlier in the week that senior management was his long-term ambition. He remains in charge the club`s league game away at MK Dons tomorrow.

Steve Coppell? to mould Dunne into the next manager? What about Richard Wilkins and Gavin Johnson at Bury Town – both legends but maybe too big a step up?

I think between us, we could get to thirty… I can could 12 possibles from the speculation already. Steve Coppell would be great for the U’s, although I’m not sure he wouldn’t wait for a club in a hiigher league position to come in for him. Has he quit the game, or is he just resting? A bit like George Williams ‘rested’ after our job before going to Orient….

Im not so sure Coppell would want the stresses again of a higher profile club. Remember his infamous 10day reign at Mancheser City?

Coppell would be great. Top, top manager. Really hope we can get in the right man. Up the U’s!

Not quite sure he is world-renowned. But I’d take him at CUFC!

One word for you, Steve = gutted!!!
