U`s Have Until 5pm To Sign Williams

Ben Williams will be a Colchester United player by five o` cock today – or not at all.

The Carlisle goalie has been subject to week-long speculation surrounding his future after the club allowed him permission to speak to United this week.

He returned, however, to pre-season training with The Cumbrian following talks but with nothing officially decided.

“I’ve put a bit of pressure on Colchester,” said Carlisle manager, Greg Abbott, on a BBC radio report yesterday.

The U`s were already looking to sign Williams before Dean Gerken left to Championship side Bristol City.

“Certainly by the end of tomorrow the deal is going to go one way or the other,” he added.

Paul Lambert, Colchester manager, has been distinctly silent on the deal which looks set to see striker Scott Vernon, signed eighteen months ago from Blackpool, go the other way.

U’s fans might be sceptical about the deal, but will it go through?
