Colchester played, and of course beat, Gosport Borough in the first round of the FA Cup last month and when they did a certain Mike Carter caught the eye for the hosts.

U’s manager Tony Humes is reportedly ‘keeping tabs’ on the midfielder who caught his eye in our cup success at Privett Park, but by all accounts we wouldn’t be alone as the former Southampton man has been putting in some eye catching performances for the non-league outfit that have seen people watching him.

Gosport man Alex Pike has told the Gazette that he can ‘understands why clubs are interested’ in the 23-year-old.

Pike also said that, as well us watching him scouts from Premier League side Burnley and league 1 rival Barnsley have been to watch Carter recently with ‘third hand’ reports telling him that clubs are interested.

He said: ‘It’s only third hand but we`ve heard that there are a number of clubs interested in Carter and they are clubs from the Football League.

‘Nobody has made an official approach. He played against Colchester and they’ve said they’re keeping tabs on him.

‘They have had a couple of tickets on the gate for every game since. We’ve had Burnley and Barnsley watching our games recently as well.

‘There is interest in him and quite rightly so – I can’t think of a better all-round midfielder in our league at the moment.’

We’ll have to keep an eye on this one when the transfer window reopens next week perhaps?
