Colchester United Ladies have gained a memorable League and Cup double, winning promotion to the Women`s Premiership following a last day of the season win at Bedford.

The Ladies, who paraded their trophies in front of home fans on the last day of the men`s season a couple of weeks ago, can expect to face the likes of West Ham, Peterborough and Fulham in the Southern Division of the Premiership.

The female game, which had collapsed in recent years due to a lack of financial support when attempting to turn professional, is enjoying something of a resurgence in popularity and the U`s Ladies double is certainly an achievement to rival that of Colchester`s Championship exploits.

Their manager, Steve Downey, now set to retire, said of the fantastic achievement: “In the last couple of months, my players have dealt with the pressure of winning a league title really well, and have been unbeaten in the league in 2007.”

Where other teams have faltered, we have been the most consistent,” he added.
