Colchester who lead for most of the game returned the short distance to Essex with nothing after taking the game to near neighbors Ipswich Town in last nights local derby.

Clive Platt had put Colchester ahead with a thunderess shot that left Scottish International Goalkeeper Neil Alexander no chance. Indeed Platt had further chances to put the game beyond Town only to see a golden chance hit the side netting when scoring seemed the easier option.

Strike partner Kevin Lisbie also had a number of chances as Colchester outplayed their hosts for 70 mins last night and after being bought down in what looked like a harsh penalty against Alexander, man of the moment Mark Yeates stepped up to seal Colchester’s first win in Suffolk since 1951.

It was not to be as Alexander saved what was a poor penalty and Ipswich seemed to go straight up the other end and score.

The missed penalty and Ipswich equalizing seemed to breath more life into the home side and their fans and Town soon found themselves 2-1 up.

Colchester who had lead for so long introduced another striker in the form of veteran Teddy Sheringham to try and wrestle something from the game, only to see Ipswich Super Sub Danny Haynes add a 3rd for the home team and break the hearts of the visitors and their fans.

Football is such a cruel game and Colchester could have been out of site and 3 goals to the good, before Ipswich had got themselves going, the misses by Platt Lisbie and particularly Yeates turned the game in the hosts favour.

Ipswich did not deserve a point from the game let alone 3, however sadly the game will be remembered for the scoreline and not what was the true balance of play.

Colchester again proved that as an attacking team they are a force to be rekoned with, however as things stand they will always ship TOO many goals!
