Colchester United have issued their own statement in the wake of this afternoon`s ruling that the fee for Paul Lambert`s compensation was £425,000.
It appears on the official website and reveals that the reigning League One champions made four separate inadequate offers after inducing Lambert and two other employees to break their contracts with the Essex club nine months ago.
Colchester were initally asking for £400,000 for Lambert’s signature when it emerged he was ready to resign following an outstanding start to the 2009/10 season, which began with the Scot overseeing a 7-1 victory for United at Carrow Road.
U`s Chairman and owner Robbie Cowling has followed the news with his own views on the settlement, which also includes separate fins for City from the Football League totalling £200,000.
He has tonight said that Norwich have “tarnished” their own name throughout the proceedings, responding also in part to claims from City`s solicitors that Colchester United “moved goalposts” during the ongoing negations.
They broke down at the turn of 2010, as is publically known, which resulted in the matter being referred to tribunal before the Football League Disciplinary Committee.
Cowling said:”It is a shame when a club with a proud history of doing things the right way believe that they can and have achieved more by inappropriate means. There should never have been any other obstacle to Paul Lambert joining Norwich other than following the rules and then agreeing the correct level of compensation.”
