Colchester United made it two wins out of two in pre-season, as the U’s cruised past Heybridge Swifts with a resounding 6-1 victory.
Following Wednesday’s 4-0 triumph over Tiptree, the U’s impressed once again.
Despite going one down, thanks to Nathan Clarke superb lob, the U’s went in 3-1 up at the break. Ex-Blackpool front-man Scott Vernon, notching his first U’s goal of pre-season, drew the teams level, with a neat header. Nigerian triallist Akanni-Sunday Wasiu, who scored against Tiptree midweek, added a second. The U’s hit a third as a Swifts’ defender stabbed home an own-goal.
After the break, following eleven half-time changes by the U’s, and the return of injured winger Mark Yeates, Clive Platt lobbed home to make it 4-1. Youngster Fabian Quintyn set-up Yeates who, after five months out, calmly side-footed home. As full-time approached, Platt set up Yeates and he drove the ball home for a brace.
U’s first half: Gerken, Ifil, Heath, Coyne, Griffiths, Wright, Perkins, Izzet, Wordsworth, Wasiu, Vernon.
U’s second half: Cousins, White, Reid (Nelson), Hammond (J), Lockwood, Elito, Jackson, Hammond (D), Yeates, Quintyn, Platt.
