U’s To Appeal Red Card

Colchester United manager Geraint Williams has today confirmed the club will be appealing the decision of referee Patrick Miller which saw Phil Ifil being sent-off.

Ifil was shown a straight red card for a trip, on Frazier Campbell, that Miller labelled ‘violent conduct’ even though minalmal contact was made. The U’s went on to lose the game 3-1 and now sit eleven points from safety at the bottom.

Williams told CU-FC.com: ‘We have looked at the video of the incident and having received the referee’s report, we have decided to appeal.’

‘The referee’s report says it was a deliberate kick and violent conduct,’ he revlealed.

‘With that in mind, we watched the video and I feel that it was not a deliberate kick and more a mis-timed trip on the opposing player.

The U’s boss added: ‘I have since spoken to Tuesday night’s match assessor to discuss the incident and confirm that he would not feel that it is a ‘frivolous appeal’ as we have seen lately.

‘He felt that we had grounds for appeal and as we do not think it was a violent act, we hope the decision will be overturned.’
