Geraint Williams has stated in the local press that he was hopeful of securing the long-term services of Wayne Brown before it became obvious last week that his heart was set on a move away.

The 29-year-old former U`s vice-captain had one year remaining on an existing deal with the Essex side, but elected to move to Hull City for £450,000.

Colchester manager Williams told the Evening Gazette this week: “I just felt we might be able to persuade Wayne to stay and extend his contract with us but there didn`t seem to be anything coming back.”

It seems the player had made his mind up: “We had a long heart-to-heart with Wayne on more than one occasion and he made it very clear that he wanted to get away,” added Williams.

“I`m very disappointed.”
