U`s Win Without Lambert – Is He Watching?

A triumphant Colchester United made a show of sheer defiance, on the day they lost both their manager and team captain, pay off – with a magnificent 2-1 victory against Gillingham.

Gills midfielder Curtis Weston gave the visitors an early lead after a superb run beyond U`s left back Lee Beevers left him with the whole goal to aim at.

The U`s fought back, however, as Kevin Lisbie took a Gillingham player unawares to steal the ball and square in a counter-attack for Scott Vernon, in a skilful equaliser, not long before half-time.

Lisbie later steered Colchester into the lead in the 66th minute, scoring gaol number 20 in his combined spells with the U`s. Vernon`s assist repaid the complement of the first period for the side’s leveller.

A jubilant stand-in skipper, Pat Baldwin, exalted the crowed by roaring them on to sing louder still at full-time in what turned out to be the perfect response to today`s altogether tumultuous events.

Kem Izzet, who also cleared off the line during the game, was a deserved Man of The Match for Colchester.

With the stadium rocking, in came the news that Norwich City had lost their league game with Brentford, under Ian Butterworth.

Lambert who?
