Colchester United goal hero Scott Vernon admitted he was ‘chuffed to bits’ after his brace earned the U’s victory over Ipswich.

The ex-Blackpool goal poacher, who started in place of the injured Clive Platt, scored in either half, as the U’s ran out 2-0 winners.

‘I’m chuffed to bits – I don’t think I’ve scored two more important goals in my career,’ Vernon told The Colchester Gazette.

‘The fans have the bragging rights and I’m thrilled to score the goals but it’s a team game and we showed that we can grind out a result.’

He also added: ‘It’s all about winning and building confidence and we hope that we can show that in the next game we play.

‘We know that we rode our luck at times and Dean Gerken made some good saves – but I felt that we deserved it.’
