Popular but out-of-favour U`s striker, Scott Vernon could be back at Gillingham for a reserve game this month as he mounts an injury comeback.

Boss Mark Stimson already hired Vernon on loan from United in the autumn but he was struck down on his debut and has since been sidelined.

The 26-year-old, though, who declined to leave in a swap deal at Carlisle involving Ben Williams over the summer, is said to be “interested” this time in switching to Kent.

The Gills manager told Kent News this week: ” I’ve spoken to his representative to see if Scott would still like to come back because we’d take him.

He added: ‘I think he was very good in the time we had him and is experienced at this level. Hopefully by the middle of the month he would’ve played some football.

The former Blackpool man has largely had to bide his time but enjoys affection in Colchester for his role during the 2005/6 season as the club won promotion under current Charlton boss, Phil Parkinson.

Despite winning plaudits earlier in the season from Paul Lambert, since left for Norwich, Vernon`s subsequent absence and lack of selection have left him unable to continue scoring goals.

He netted four times in the opening month of 2009/10 after a good pre-season run.

Well, like I’ve said before – not sure Aidy rates him. Think he could be handy in the second half of the season though.

Stick him thee to get his fitness back and have Gilly, Vernon, Platt, Lisbie and Kay all fighting for it! Sell Thomas… play Lis on the right?!
