Ashley Vincent’s return from damaged ligaments and muscle around his knee stepped up with a 45-minute outing for the reserves on Tuesday.

He has been in full training for a few weeks with Colchester now but this outing has moved him closer to a competitive return.

Games, as he told the official website, are what he now needs and this run out against Crawley will have done him no harm: ‘it was great to be back out on the pitch again, but it was frustrating that my legs weren’t doing exactly what I wanted them to!

‘I need games now to get that sharpness back and I’ve been working in the afternoons as well to get back into the first-team squad as soon as possible.’

The game was won 4-1 with Steven Gillespie grabbing a hat-trick and Karl Duguid the other.
