John Ward knows that Colchester are in need of a win but also knows that they couldn’t have afforded another defeat against Crawley on Tuesday night, so settled for the point.

Nobody wants to win more than him, but he took the point going into a big game with Scunthorpe at the weekend: ‘It’s okay – we all want to win – me more than anybody. But at the same time it was important not to lose and now we can get ready and prepare for Scunthorpe on Saturday.’

The U’s boss wasn’t so happy with the award of the Crawley goal to give them a lead; this was controversially given when it appeared that Kyle McFadzean seemed to handle the ball in the build-up to his goal.

Ironically Ward also felt his side had played better in the two recent defeats that this draw but feels, against a good side, this is a good point: ‘We’ve probably played better in the two defeats we’ve just had but that’s the game of football. We’ve had a decision go against us but that’s how it goes.

‘We went very positive in the second half and got Anthony Wordsworth on the ball more. We got something out of the game, against a team who are fourth in our division and had just won at Preston which was a fantastic result for them.’
