Colchester’s game against Sheffield United might have been “scrappy” but John Ward concedes he would sooner a “scrappy draw” than a “scrappy defeat”.

Ward views this 1-1 draw at The WHCS as the best of The U’s season so far: ‘It was a bit of a scrappy draw, but it’s better than a scrappy defeat. The way that the point was obtained means that it was the best one of the three that we’ve earned so far this season.

‘We had to stay with the game and our goalkeeper again has had another very good game. If we hadn’t stayed with it, we would have rolled over and lost the game.’

Sheffield United are one of the best team in league one so the Colchester boss knows that it can be “hard to stay with them” but if you can stay in a game you always have the chance of getting something: ‘When Sheffield United have the players they have got, it’s sometimes hard to stay with them. But if you go away from it and accept that they’re better than you, you’ll get beaten.’
