Colchester paid the price for not being able to match Charlton on or off the field on Tuesday night.

That is the opinion of John Ward, as he told BBC Essex, after The U’s 2-0 defeat at home against the league one leaders on Tuesday: ‘I can’t match them because I’ve not got a million pounds, my players do make mistakes every now and again.

‘They didn’t make too many mistakes in the same way that we did.’

For that reason he feels errors are all the more costly against sides such as Charlton: ‘if you do that against good teams they are going to punish you.’
